Brazilian midfielder Fred talks up the part Arsenal great Gilberto Silva played in his move to Manchester United this summer.

Fred has revealed that former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva played a big part in his switch from Shakhtar Donetsk to Manchester United during the summer transfer window.

The Brazil international reportedly had a number of clubs to choose from before settling for the Red Devils, who were willing to hand over £52m for his services.

Acting as his fellow Brazilian's representative, Gilberto - a member of Arsenal's Invincibles squad in 2003-04 - persuaded Fred to join Premier League giants United.

"Gilberto was a top midfielder who played for Arsenal. But he has a lot of respect for Manchester United, who are obviously a big club here in England," he told United's official website.

"He praised the club a lot and, after he was granted the opportunity to speak to Jose Mourinho and other senior figures at United, we made the decision together for me to come here. We decided it would be a good move for me.

"Gilberto is a top guy and his advice means a lot to me. He played in the same position as I do and he won the Premier League, so I look to him for inspiration, I listen to what he has to say and I take on board what he tells me."

Fred has started both of United's league games since arriving at Old Trafford, playing 76 minutes against Leicester City and the full 90 against Brighton & Hove Albion.
