On this day: Everton storm to comfortable win over Manchester United

On this day in 2010, Everton come from behind to secure a 3-1 victory over Manchester United at Goodison Park.

During Sir Alex Ferguson's reign at Manchester United, his side's away performances were one of the key factors in their success each season.

Whether a stubborn defensive display or positive attacking approach was needed, Ferguson seemed to get it right more often than not when his side travelled away from Old Trafford.

However, every so often a result was produced which came as a shock, and it was on this day five years ago when Everton dominated United to record a deserved 3-1 victory at Goodison Park.

An Everton win appeared unlikely when United made the perfect start to the match by breaking the deadlock in the 16th minute.

Antonio Valencia's pace on the wing allowed him to find the space to deliver a cross which caused problems in the Everton defence, and Dimitar Berbatov quickly latched on to a loose ball to fire home the opening goal.

A sluggish start may have had Everton supporters fearing the worst, but the Toffees were back on level terms three minutes later when Diniyar Bilyaletdinov unleashed a stunning strike from the edge of the box to leave Edwin van der Saar helpless.

The equaliser surprised United and forced the hosts onto the front foot, with Bilyaletdinov poking wide after Louis Saha had left a cross from Leighton Baines.

Everton continued to look the sharper of the two sides, but their former young hero Wayne Rooney almost restored United's advantage when he took the ball past Tim Howard before wasting the chance with a poor touch.

The visitors were unable to keep the pressure on for any extended spell, despite coming close early in the second half when Darren Fletcher's powerful strike drifted just past the post.

It was Everton who continued to threaten, and they were finally rewarded with 14 minutes remaining when Steven Pienaar drilled in the perfect cross for substitute Dan Gosling to convert from close range.

A win would have been enough to satisfy the ecstatic Everton supporters at Goodison Park, but the locals were treated to one final moment of magic as David Moyes's side made it an afternoon to remember.

As United went in search of a late equaliser Everton found the space to break, and Jack Rodwell completed the win in style by collecting the ball in midfield before sprinting past Jonny Evans and finishing confidently.
