Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim says that the club "are being really careful with transfers" in a bid to avoid 'mistakes of the past'.

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim said that the club "are being really careful with transfers" when asked how he viewed the recent winter market for the 20-time English champions.

The Red Devils allowed Marcus Rashford, Antony and Tyrell Malacia to leave on loan during the January transfer window, while there were two incomings in the shape of 18-year-old centre-back Ayden Heaven from Arsenal and 20-year-old left-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce.

Man United had been heavily linked with a move for Bayern Munich's Mathys Tel, but negotiations with his German club broke down, as the Red Devils are only believed to have been offered a straight loan deal, and he eventually joined Tottenham Hotspur.

Amorim said that Man United were cautious in the winter window due to fear of 'making the same mistakes of the past'.

"What I feel is that the club is taking its time, we know the urgency of the moment of the team, everybody here doesn't want to make the same mistakes of the past, in the summer we will see," Amorim told reporters.

"But like I said, we are being really careful with transfers because we did some mistakes in the past."

Heaven and Dorgu could both make their debuts against Leicester City in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Friday night, and Amorim is under pressure to deliver a positive result against the Foxes.

Man United will enter the clash off the back of a 2-0 home loss to Crystal Palace in the Premier League, and Amorim has accepted that his position is a subject of debate due to the team's struggles.

"That is clear, is also exciting, I know when I choose this profession that you have the risk of results and I knew when I came here I look at the schedule, I look at the team, my decision changing everything in the middle of the season without new signings is a danger for a coach," he added.

"But I have a clear idea of what I want to do and I take these risks because in the end it's going to pay off but I'm not naive, I said that many times, this is a sport of results and we are in a difficult situation."

Amorim was also asked about Rashford's exit, with the England international moving to Aston Villa on loan for the second half of the campaign, while Unai Emery's side have the chance to sign him on a permanent basis for £40m this summer.

"Guys, in the summer. Like we said before, we are fighting for our jobs until the summer. I am just focused on these games. Marcus is in Birmingham now with Unai, so you can the questions to another coach. We are just focused on our players," he added.

Man United have lost five of their last seven home matches in all competitions, but they have been victorious in each of their last five FA Cup fixtures at Old Trafford, including a 4-3 success over Liverpool last term.
