Newcastle United's Fabian Schar to miss rest of season?

Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar is unlikely to play in the Premier League again this season after tearing a ligament in his knee against Southampton.

Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar could be sidelined for the remainder of the 2020-21 campaign with the knee injury he picked up against Southampton.

The 29-year-old was forced off on a stretcher in the 75th minute against the Saints, and Newcastle have since confirmed that the injury - a torn knee ligament - is as serious as it first looked.

Now, Schar has conceded that he will be sidelined for a "few months", meaning that any hopes of him featuring before the 2020-21 Premier League campaign concludes are extremely unlikely.

Schar took to Twitter to reveal the news, saying: "It's difficult to accept. I felt really good on the pitch and the team did well the last few games. Now i will be out for a few months and its gonna be a hard time.

"But I will try everything to be back on the pitch as soon as possible. And my goal will be to be ready for the Euros."

Despite being forced to see out the remainder of the match with nine men after Schar went off, Steve Bruce's men still held on for a 3-2 victory over Southampton at St James' Park.
