Mauricio Pochettino thanks the Southampton players and fans for his warm welcome after holding Everton to a goalless draw in his first match since being appointed Saints boss.

New Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino is grateful to the club's players and fans for the warm welcome he has received since taking over at St Mary's.

The Argentine was a surprise successor to Nigel Adkins, who was dismissed from the post on Friday despite a run of five unbeaten Premier League matches.

Pochettino's appointment was expected to be greeted negatively by the home crowd this evening but there were few protests to his regime as they recorded a goalless draw with Everton.

He said: "I want to thank the players for the three days they have worked with me, they have done well. I also have to thank the supporters, they have been kind and the reception was amazing.

"We did well tonight, we created several chances to score. The only shame was that we did not score a lot of goals but we created a lot of chances against a good side like Everton. We suffered a bit in the second half, we were not as good as we were in the first half.

"I really enjoyed the game today, when you are watching the league from outside, you don't realise. The people who have worked in this league always said that it is amazing and I really enjoyed it."

Pochettino required an English-to-Spanish translator to conduct his post-match interview with Sky Sports.
