Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to join the race to sign an ex-Premier League defender during the January transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Everton defender Ben Godfrey.

Despite their well-documented injury issues, Spurs went into Sunday's Premier League fixture with Liverpool possessing one of the best defensive records in the division.

However, Ange Postecoglou witnessed his side succumb to a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the leaders in a game where the North Londoners could have conceded more.

After the game, Postecoglou retained his stance regarding an unwillingness to alter his style of play, as well as reiterating that goals are being conceded to not having his first-choice goalkeeper, two centre-backs and left-back available.

According to Football Insider, Spurs are ready to try to tempt an Englishman back to the Premier League in order to help resolve their issues.

Spurs make Godfrey approach

The report claims that Spurs have already made an approach to sign Godfrey, just half a year after he made the switch to Italy.

Atalanta BC paid in the region of £10m to sign Godfrey from Everton, the expectation being that he would be provided with regular game time.

Instead, the 26-year-old has been provided with just five substitute appearances in all competitions, a consequence of the Serie A's side outstanding form.

Godfrey has largely only been provided with cameo outings once games have been over as a contest, naturally leading to uncertainty over his future at the club.

Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers have also been credited with an interest in the versatile England international this month.

How are Atalanta likely to react?

Even with Giorgio Scalvini sidelined through injury, Gian Piero Gasperini has an array of players who are capable of featuring in his back three.

He will see value in retaining Godfrey's services given that the club are involved in a title race and are on the brink of guaranteeing themselves a place in the top 24 of the Champions League standings in the League Phase.

From Godfrey's perspective, though, he needs first-team football having now only made 35 appearances since the start of the 2022-23 campaign.

Providing that a substantial loan fee is involved, Atalanta could allow him to return to his homeland, with the possibility being there to acquire a suitable replacement.
