Marcelino delighted with new Villarreal deal

Villarreal boss Marcelino vows to challenge for a place in the Champions League after signing a new long-term contract with the Yellow Submarine.

Marcelino has revealed his delight after signing a new long-term contract at Villarreal, which will run until the summer of 2019.

The 50-year-old, who agreed the terms last week, took control of the Spanish club at the start of 2013 and led them back to La Liga after their relegation to Spain's second flight.

Since then, the coach has secured two top-six finishes and he is now targeting returning the Yellow Submarine to the Champions League.

"I want to offer my thanks for the opportunity to stay here at this great club. I had a clear idea of wanting to stay connected and the club wanted it too. They've offered me a three-year contract, which is very difficult in Spanish football," Marcelino told reporters.

"Now we know our strengths and weaknesses. I believe I can fulfil this contract. First we win on Sunday. We're a big club and I'm very comfortable and it's reciprocal. The time has gone quickly because on a personal and professional level there have been very good moments.

"So I am pleased and excited to continue in this great project. We'll provide work, dedication, and enthusiasm for continuous improvement. And we'll see where we get from here. I'd like to be able to at least continue in Europe and if we could approach the Champions League, that would be wonderful."

Marcelino has also previously managed the likes of Sporting Gijon, Racing Santander and Sevilla during a well-travelled coaching career.

Villarreal return to league action this weekend with a home match against in-form Eibar, who sit just one place behind Marcelino's side in the table.
