Watford confirm the appointment of Forest Green Rovers manager Rob Edwards as their new Head Coach for the 2022-23 campaign.

Watford have confirmed the appointment of Forest Green Rovers manager Rob Edwards as their new Head Coach for the 2022-23 campaign.

The 39-year-old leaves The New Lawn having led the club to its first-ever League Two title earlier in May, meaning the Gloucestershire side will compete in League One for the first time from next season.

However, with a clause in Edwards's contract allowing him to freely discuss a move to other clubs, the Hornets have pounced to secure their replacement for current boss Roy Hodgson, who will leave Vicarage Road at the end of the 2021-22 campaign.

Following their confirmed relegation from the Premier League after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday, Edwards will take charge of Watford in the Championship, with an immediate return to the top flight the primary goal.

The news was announced on Watford's official club website on Wednesday, with a statement reading: "Watford Football Club is delighted to confirm the appointment of Rob Edwards as its new Head Coach, effective after the conclusion of the current 2021/22 season.

"Rob had a contractual provision allowing him to leave Forest Green Rovers at any time to discuss employment opportunities at other clubs and the Hornets are delighted to confirm our discussions concluded today."

Having joined Forest Green in May 2021, Edwards has earned plenty of plaudits for his style of play, as well as his success on the pitch, during his spell in charge, with this season's achievement earning the Welshman the League Two manager of the season award.
