Ravel Morrison scores twice as West Ham United defeat Sporting Lisbon 3-2 to begin a three-team tournament also featuring Braga in the Algarve.

West Ham United have continued their pre-season preparations with a 3-2 success over Sporting Lisbon in the Algarve, thanks to a brace from youngster Ravel Morrison.

United were without Andy Carroll and George McCartney for the friendly, but made a positive start against the Portuguese giants.

A hard-fought first half saw three West Ham players pick up yellow cards, including Matthew Taylor and Winston Reid.

Taylor was then judged to have handled in first-half stoppage time, handing Sporting a penalty which Diego Capel duly dispatched.

The Hammmers responded positively when play resumed, turning the match on its head with two goals in as many minutes.

First Kevin Nolan ghosted into the penalty area to guide home after a flick header from Modibo Maiga, before Morrison found the bottom corner with a measured drive from distance.

Morrison was then picked out by a curling cross into the penalty area from Joe Cole after strong work from Razvan Rat, with the 20-year-old making no mistake to head home from close range.

Sporting reduced the deficit six minutes from time thanks to a deft flick from William Carvalho, but Sam Allardyce's side held firm to claim a notable pre-season scalp.

Both sides then took part in a bizarre penalty shootout in case of a tie at the three-team tournament, which ended 4-4 as Cole buried a penalty in the final action of the evening.
