Richard Gasquet has booked his place in round two of the 2014 Australian Open by beating David Guez in straight sets.
The ninth seed was too good for fellow Frenchman Guez, eventually winning 7-5 6-4 6-1 after 113 minutes.
Gasquet lost three service games, but he countered this by converting seven of 10 break points.
He made 32 winners and 20 unforced errors, while hitting 12 aces and being successful on eight of his 11 ventures to the net.
Left-hander Gasquet faces a tough test in the second round, with either Nikolay Davydenko or Lukasz Kubot standing in his way.
