Roger Federer has beaten Pete Sampras's record for most weeks at world number one, as this week marks his 287th at the ATP summit.

He returned to number one after victory over Andy Murray at Wimbledon to equal Sampras's 286 weeks, and has now surpassed the record.

"I'm proud and honoured to beat Pete's record as he was my childhood hero and I've always looked up to him," Federer said.

"It is an amazing feeling to have regained the number one ranking. I never thought with the depth in the game this year that I would have been able to get it back so quickly."

Federer has also equalled Sampras's seven Wimbledon titles with his victory at the All England club.
