Preview: AFC Wimbledon vs. Weymouth - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's FA Cup clash between AFC Wimbledon and Weymouth, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

AFC Wimbledon will welcome Weymouth for an FA Cup first-round replay on Tuesday evening, with the two sides unable to be separated in their first game last weekend.

Ayoub Assal handed Wimbledon the lead in the fifth minute of the contest, before Ahkeem Rose levelled the scores in the 70th minute of the clash in Dorset.

AFC Wimbledon would have expected to get the job done in the first round against Weymouth last weekend, and they made the perfect start in the fifth minute, registering through Assal, but their National League South opponents managed to hit back in the second period.

Johnnie Jackson's side have played twice since the clash on November 5, taking four points from their League Two games against Leyton Orient and Salford City, which has left them in 15th spot in the table.

The Dons were relegated from League One last season, and they have found it difficult during the 2022-23 campaign, picking up 23 points from 18 matches, which has left them in the bottom half of the division.

AFC Wimbledon reached the third round of last season's competition, overcoming Guiseley and Cheltenham Town in the opening two rounds before suffering a 2-0 defeat to Boreham Wood in early January.

Weymouth, meanwhile, will enter the contest off the back of a 1-0 victory over Braintree United on Saturday.

Despite the positive result, Bobby Wilkinson's side remain bottom of the National League South, having picked up just eight points from their opening 16 matches of the season.

There is no getting away from the fact that it has been a difficult league campaign for the club, who have won just twice in 2022-23, scoring only 13 goals and conceding 35 times in the process.

Weymouth were relegated from the National League last season, so it would be a huge blow if they dropped down another division for the 2023-24 campaign.

The Terras had to win three games to advance to this stage of the FA Cup, overcoming Winchester City, Welling United and Havant & Waterlooville before the draw with AFC Wimbledon last time out.

Team News

AFC Wimbledon boss Jackson will need to assess the fitness of his players following Saturday's goalless draw with Salford, but it is expected to be largely the same XI for this game.

Josh Davison should again feature in the final third of the field, with Courtney Senior also likely to keep his starting role for Tuesday's fixture.

David Fisher came off the bench on Saturday and is also pushing for a starting role, but Alexander Woodyard and Harry Pell should both keep their spots in the XI.

As for Weymouth, there are unlikely to be any surprises when it comes to their side on Tuesday night.

Rose was on the scoresheet in the clash between the two sides last weekend, and the 23-year-old is again expected to feature in the final third of the field.

Meanwhile, Tom Bearwish, who has scored three league goals this season, is set to feature in an attacking area for the National League South side.

AFC Wimbledon possible starting lineup:
Tzanev; Gunter, Kalambayi, Towler, Currie; Pell, Woodward, Maghomar; Senior, Assal, Davison

Weymouth possible starting lineup:
Oualah; Ash, Matsuzaka, Howe, Carlyle, Kyprianou; O'Connell, Blair, Bearwish; Rose, McBurnie

We say: AFC Wimbledon 2-0 Weymouth

Weymouth were impressive when the two sides met last time out, but we are finding it difficult to predict anything other than a home victory in this match due to AFC Wimbledon's superior quality across the pitch.
