Preview: Ajax vs. APOEL

Sports Mole looks ahead to the final Champions League group encounter between Ajax and APOEL.

When Ajax and APOEL meet in the Amsterdam Arena on Wednesday night, both sides will know that they have no chance of reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League.

However, there is still plenty to play for where Group F's bottom two teams are concerned.

Third-placed Ajax have two points from their first five outings, while Cypriot visitors APOEL have just one. It means that the victor in Amsterdam will secure their place in the Europa League, while the other will see their European ambitions ended for another season.

In terms of team selection, head coach Frank de Boer has a handful of injury concerns, with Viktor Fischer and vice-captain Nicolai Boilesen both sidelined, while youngster Anwar El Ghazi is a doubt with a groin complaint.

There is also a chance that striker Kolbeinn Sigthorsson will miss out, having limped off early on during the 5-0 win over Willem II at the weekend.

As for the away outfit, experienced midfielder Constantinos Charalambides will play no part because of an ankle problem.

Were Ajax not to claim a victory from this encounter, it would be the first time in the Dutch club's history that they have failed to win any of their six Champions League group outings.

When the two sides met in Nicosia on matchday two, the contest ended in a 1-1 draw.
