Danny Welbeck: Arsenal "could have done better" at Camp Nou

Danny Welbeck believes that Arsenal should have made more of their chances in the 5-1 aggregate defeat to Barcelona.

Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck has admitted his disappointment at seeing the club's Champions League hopes come to an end at the round-of-16 stage.

The Gunners faced a near impossible challenge this evening as they were tasked with overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit against holders Barcelona.

Mohamed Elneny gave travelling supporters just a glimmer of hope at Camp Nou when finding the net, but that came after Neymar had already opened the scoring on the night to make the task even more daunting.

Strikes from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi would follow, ensuring that each member of Barca's attacking trident got themselves on the scoresheet on another tough evening for Arsenal.

"We had some chances," Welbeck told BT Sport at full time. "It was difficult to come here 2-0 down but we had a plan to get through. It was a difficult occasion for us and unfortunately we couldn't get through.

"We had a couple of opportunities where we should have done better and with the quality they have then they are clinical when they have chances.

"Coming to the Camp Nou you really want to leave your mark, we could have done better in certain situations and it is disappointing."

Arsenal, who now have just the Premier League to focus on this season, return to action on Saturday with a trip to take on Everton.
