Liverpool's home Premier League contest with bitter rivals Manchester United on Sunday afternoon will go ahead as planned.

Liverpool's home Premier League contest with Manchester United is on, with the fixture between the two most successful clubs in English football going ahead as planned at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Snow fell overnight in the Liverpool area, leading to suggestions that the clash could be postponed due to bad weather and concerns over travel to and from Anfield.

Amber weather warnings for snow and freezing rain are in place in both Liverpool and Manchester, and Liverpool City Council's Safety Advisory Group held a meeting on Sunday morning to discuss the situation.

"A safety meeting was held this morning to assess the weather and travel conditions for today's fixture against Manchester United at Anfield," Liverpool said in a statement on Sunday morning. "At this stage the match is planned to go ahead as normal and every effort is being made to get the game on.

"A further safety meeting will take place again at midday to assess the latest conditions. We will update supporters just as soon as we can. Please take extra care out there, Reds."

Liverpool confirm Man United clash will go ahead as planned

Liverpool have now provided an update on the situation following a second meeting, with the clash confirmed to be going ahead.

"Today's fixture against Manchester United will go ahead as planned. Two safety meetings were held earlier to assess the weather and travel conditions," said the statement.

"We thank everyone involved in helping us to get this game on today. If you're travelling to Anfield then please take extra care. We look forward to seeing you there."

The Merseyside derby, scheduled for the start of December, had to be postponed due to Storm Darragh, which caused heavy winds across the majority of the United Kingdom, leading to a red warning from the Met Office.

However, Liverpool have avoided a second postponement of the season, with the Reds set to continue their Premier League campaign at home to Ruben Amorim's Man United team on Sunday afternoon.

Where are Liverpool, Man United in the Premier League table?

Man United will enter this match off the back of four straight losses in all competitions, including their last three in the Premier League against Bournemouth, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United.

Amorim's team are currently down in 14th spot in the Premier League table, only seven points above the relegation zone, while they sit some 14 points off the top four.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are enjoying an excellent campaign, with Arne Slot's side top of the division, five points clear of second-placed Arsenal with two games in hand.

The Reds would strengthen their grip on first position in the table with a victory over Man United, and they will be looking to record their 15th league success of the campaign against their struggling opponents.
