Arsene Wenger dismisses suggestions from Unai Emery that Arsenal were 'a club in decline' during his final two years at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsene Wenger has suggested that Unai Emery should 'take responsibility' for his mixed spell at Arsenal.

While the Gunners reached the Europa League final during his 18-month reign, Emery was sacked earlier this season after a prolonged period of poor form.

Although Emery has claimed that he helped rebuild a club which he felt was in decline, Wenger has dismissed that statement, pointing to the club's performances in 2017.

Speaking at the Laureus World Sports Awards, the Frenchman said: "In 2017 we made 75 points and won the FA Cup so you cannot say that [Arsenal were in decline] and the year before we finished second in the league. 2018 was my last year but it is very difficult to come out on that.

"Arsenal is a club that is in a very strong position financially. It has good players, after that when you are a manager you have to stand up for what you do and your result and not look around you. That is the only thing you can do."

Emery won 43 and lost 19 of his 78 matches in charge of the Premier League outfit.
