Mikel Arteta 'wants Thierry Henry as Arsenal assistant'

Mikel Arteta reportedly lines up Arsenal's all-time record goalscorer Thierry Henry as his assistant should he be named as Arsene Wenger's successor at the Emirates.

Mikel Arteta has reportedly lined up Arsenal legend Thierry Henry as his assistant should he be named Arsene Wenger's successor at the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta has emerged as the overwhelming favourite to take over at his former club, with the likes of Luis Enrique, Massimiliano Allegri and Brendan Rodgers having seemingly dropped out of the running.

The Spaniard, who has spent the past two seasons as Pep Guardiola's assistant at Manchester City, is expected to be unveiled as Arsenal's new manager in the coming weeks.

The Independent reports that the only details yet to be decided upon relate to Arteta's backroom staff, with Arsenal's all-time record goalscorer Henry among the candidates to come in as the 36-year-old's number two.

Henry is currently serving as assistant boss to Roberto Martinez with Belgium, but could be interested in a return to his former club after this summer's World Cup.

The Frenchman scored 228 goals in 376 games over two spells at Arsenal.
