Robbie Savage: Arsenal could end up with "panic buys"

Robbie Savage feels that Arsenal's transfer inactivity could see them sign several "panic buys" before the window shuts on September 2.

Robbie Savage believes that Arsenal's lack of transfer activity so far could see them end up with a host of "panic buys" before the window shuts.

The Gunners have been heavily criticised for their inactivity so far after they were linked with several big-name players but only officially landed Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer.

Manager Arsene Wenger has reportedly been after players such as Liverpool striker Luis Suarez and Manchester United's Wayne Rooney, and was said to be chasing Gonzalo Higuain and Stevan Jovetic before the forwards moved to Napoli and Manchester City respectively.

Savage wrote in his column in The Mirror: "Why has he let the whole summer pass him by without making a big hole in that transfer fund?

"The last time Wenger left his transfer window shopping until the last minute, he bought four players on the same day [in 2011] – including Brazilian Andre Santos, one of the worst players ever to wear the Arsenal shirt.

"That's why he was facing angry punters, waving placards pleading with him to 'Spend, Spend, Spend', after the home defeat to Aston Villa. I hope his response is not another rash of last-minute panic buys."

The deadline passes on September 2.
