Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has acknowledged that he wants Shkodran Mustafi to remain at the Emirates Stadium.
While Mustafi found himself out of favour during the first half of the campaign, the Germany international has emerged as a key player since Arteta's appointment in December.
With the 28-year-old having just 12 months left on his contract, Arteta has suggested that he has asked the club's board to agree fresh terms with the player.
Arteta is quoted by The Mirror as saying: "That's something the club has to address but he knows my opinion.
"I'm really happy with him as you can see. The way he's playing, how committed he is with everything we're trying to do, the level in his performance ever three or four days, he's been really consistent."
Mustafi has made 24 appearances in all competitions this season, 17 of which have come since Boxing Day.
