Alan Pardew 'on guard' over Yohan Cabaye

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew insists that he will stay on his guard over Yohan Cabaye as tonight's transfer deadline looms large.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has insisted that he will spend today doing everything in his power to fend off any late interest in his players, with particular attention paid to the future of Yohan Cabaye.

The French midfielder came on as a substitute for his first action of the season in Saturday's 1-0 win over Fulham after the Magpies rejected a bid of around £10m for his signature from Arsenal.

Pardew has admitted that he still needs to hold frank discussions with Cabaye, but will wait until the transfer window has closed and his immediate future on Tyneside is secure.

He told The Guardian: "I'm on my guard. And I'll be spending transfer deadline day on my guard.

"We're not in too bad a state. If we can keep Yohan and add someone else it'll have been a fairly successful window.

"It was important to get Yohan out there and it'll make it easier for us all to move on, although, if he stays, there's a lot of talking to be done. We need to make sure we go forward hand in hand."

Newcastle have signed just one player so far this summer, the addition of Les Blues striker Loic Remy on a season-long loan move from Queens Park Rangers.
