Arsene Wenger: "We are short at the back"

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits that his squad is short of numbers in defence, but insists that he is not close to conducting any further transfer business.

Arsene Wenger has admitted that Arsenal could do with making defensive reinforcements before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month.

The Gunners have signed Calum Chambers and Mathieu Debuchy this summer, but have allowed former captain Thomas Vermaelen to join Barcelona.

However, speaking after his side's 0-0 Champions League qualifying draw with Besiktas on Tuesday, Wenger insisted that Arsenal were not close to doing any business.

"I have nothing special to add on that at the moment," he told reporters. "Honestly, we are not close to signing anybody. We are a bit short at the back, yes."

The Emirates Stadium outfit have been linked with a bid for Manchester City defender Matija Nastasic.
