Former Chelsea captain Dennis Wise claims that Arsenal should have concentrated on improving their defence this month rather than signing new attacking players.

Former Chelsea captain Dennis Wise has claimed that Arsenal should have concentrated on improving their defence this month rather than bringing new attacking players to the club.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has followed former Borussia Dortmund teammate Henrikh Mkhitaryan through the door at the Emirates Stadium during the January window.

The Gunners are still short at the back, however, and they suffered a 3-1 defeat away to Swansea City in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

Wise has said that Arsenal "now look very good" in the final third of the field, but the former midfielder is surprised that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has not improved his defence during the winter transfer window.

"Going forward Arsenal now look very good," Wise told Sky Sports News. "But the problem for Arsenal is that they concede too many goal and so I thought Arsenal would go in for a defender. But obviously they thought this was more important."

Arsenal have been linked with a move for West Bromwich Albion centre-back Jonny Evans throughout the month, but that deal now looks dead in the water.
