Fabian Delph demands response after "painful" Southampton defeat

Aston Villa captain Fabian Delph tells his side to beat Burnley and make inroads towards atoning for the "painful" 6-1 defeat at Southampton.

Fabian Delph has demanded that Aston Villa respond to their "painful" 6-1 defeat at Southampton by bookending their season with victory over Burnley next week.

Villa fans made a 140-mile trip to the South Coast on Saturday and hundreds were seen leaving after the visitors trailed 5-1 at the break, with Sadio Mane scoring the quickest hat-trick in Premier League history.

Results elsewhere meant that Tim Sherwood's side won their relegation battle, but the Villans captain is refusing to let defeat be the lasting memory of a trying season.

He told AVTV: "I just have to apologise to the travelling fans. It was painful. They came a long way to watch us at Southampton and witnessed a disgraceful first 45 minutes.

"I thought we showed a bit more pride and bit more heart in the second half. But that wasn't the Aston Villa that they have been watching for the last six or seven weeks.

"From today we will put it behind us and look to the next game. It wasn't good enough. We have to put it right at the weekend."

Villa face Arsenal in the FA Cup final on May 30.
