Ray Wilkins to take up Aston Villa coaching role

Ray Wilkins is to join Aston Villa's backroom staff ahead of the 2015-16 season as Tim Sherwood's assistant manager.

Ray Wilkins has revealed that he will take up a coaching role at Aston Villa ahead of the new season.

The 58-year-old, who has previously taken charge of Fulham and Queens Park Rangers, is to link up with the Villans as Tim Sherwood's assistant manager.

Wilkins confirmed the news during an interview with Sky Sports News, with the hope that his experience can help turn around the club's fortunes in 2015-16.

"Tim is similar to me in that he wants to win and is pretty bubbly," he said. "As soon as I spoke to him it seemed to click.

"I've been very fortunate over my coaching career to be involved with lots of managers of a very high level. Hopefully I can give the lads at Villa that experience."

Villa finished last season's Premier League campaign down in 17th place, while also suffering a heavy defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
