Atletico Madrid qualify for quarter-finals of Copa del Rey

Atletico Madrid qualify for the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey with a 2-0 win over Valencia.

Atletico Madrid eased past Valencia 2-0 at Vicente Calderon to qualify for quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey this evening.

Second-half goals from Diego Godin and Raul Garcia were enough for Diego Simeone's side as they went through 3-1 on aggregate.

With the tie poised at 1-1 from the first leg last week, neither side was able to create anything clear cut in the first half and Diego Costa had the best chance when he spun on the edge of the box before firing a left-footed effort at goal.

The much-changed Los Che found it difficult to force their way into Atletico's final third but Thibaut Courtois was called into action towards the end of the half before Helder Postiga headed the resulting corner over the bar.

Godin opened the scoring six minutes after the restart when he headed home from a corner, before Garcia struck the post on the hour mark with a fierce effort from range.

Garcia got his goal in stoppage time when he made the most of more poor defensive work from the visitors to head in from another corner.
