The 35-year-old is currently a free agent after leaving Sunderland last year, and Rovers boss Steve Kean is understood to be keen on adding the Dutchman to his squad.
Rovers currently sit 17th in the Premier League after 27 games played.
Kean takes his side to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
