The visitors made a perfect start to the match by grabbing a crucial away goal after just three minutes when Carlos Tevez rifled a powerful effort into the top corner from 25 yards out.
Stephan Lichtsteiner also tried his luck from distance in the 16th minute, but this time Roman Weidenfeller was equal to the effort and punched it to safety.
Juventus were dealt a blow before the half-hour mark, however, when Paul Pogba was forced to limp off and be replaced by Andrea Barzagli.
Chances were few and far between over the remainder of the half as Dortmund struggled to come up with a response, leaving them needing at least two goals after the break to stand any chance of progressing.
