Burnley beat Reading 2-1 this afternoon, with only the Royals' goalkeeper to thank for keeping the scores close.

Burnley have defeated Reading 2-1 in the Championship, thanks to goals from Sam Vokes and Dannny Ings.

The score could have been far greater had it not been for Reading's goalkeeper, but Burnley were made to hang on at the end.

Burnley started well and took the lead after just 21 minutes thanks to Ings's 11th goal of the season, as the striker timed his run well and tucked home Kieran Trippier's delivery.

Reading got themselves into the game after that, as Tom Heaton had to be in good form to deny Pavel Pogrebnyak and Jordan Obita.

After the break Burnley took control once more and it was Reading's turn to thank their goalkeeper. Alex McCarthy produced an excellent double-save to deny Ings and Steve Jones, before tipping another Ings strike onto the post.

The Burnley forward was denied a third time by the goalkeeper after breaking the offside trap.

The hosts eventually did double their lead with just over 10 minutes to go thanks to a nice finish from Vokes, but Reading responded immediately as Jason Shackell put the ball in his own net.

Obita continued to threaten the home side's defence but Burnley were able to hang on for all three points.
