Chapecoense fined for missing fixture

Chapecoense are fined around £24,000 for failing to fulfil their final fixture of the Brazilian Serie A season.

Chapecoense have been fined around £24,000 for failing to play their final fixture of the Brazilian Serie A season in the wake of the tragic plane crash last month.

Most of the side's first team - as well as the manager and coaching staff - were killed when the charter plane carrying them to the Copa Sudamericana final crashed in Colombia on November 28.

The final round of fixtures in the Brazilian top flight was due to take place on December 1, but Chape decided not to play the final game against Atletico Mineiro.

The match had no bearing on relegation or qualification for South American tournaments, but the Brazilian Superior Court of Justice has nonetheless decided to fine both sides for skipping the game.

Chape were awarded the Copa Sudamericana trophy last week after Atletico Nacional opted to forfeit the final.
