Cesar Azpilicueta hoping for Spain start

Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta hopes that his recent club form will gain him a starting role for Spain at the World Cup this summer.

Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta is hopeful that his form during the 2013-14 season will gain him a starting role for Spain at the World Cup this summer.

The 24-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Marseille in 2012, was arguably the best full-back in the Premier League last season, with his performances ousting Ashley Cole from the Blues XI.

The defender has been included in the La Roja squad for the tournament this summer, meanwhile, and will seemingly battle Atletico Madrid's Juanfran for a starting role at right-back.

"This year I played on the left. The coach thought I could help in that position and I was glad to do it. I'll play in more positions," he told AS.

"Of course I will fight for my place because I am ambitious and I want more. When I was 15 or 16 playing in the senior team was a dream when we all start at the lower levels.

"It's a dream to go to the World Cup. I hope we all get there in the best possible condition."

Azpilicueta has played at every level for Spain from the Under-16s.
