Ashley Cole retires from international football after World Cup snub

Ashley Cole confirms his retirement from international football after being left out of the England squad for this summer's World Cup.

Ashley Cole has confirmed his retirement from international football having been left out of the England squad for this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

The Chelsea full-back was informed by England boss Roy Hodgson that Southampton's Luke Shaw would get the nod ahead of him when the provisional squad is announced tomorrow.

It is understood that the 33-year-old turned down the option to be on the team's standby list, instead choosing to announce his international retirement having made 107 appearances for the Three Lions.

"I got the call from Roy and agree England team should be about the young players. I think it best I retire from England team now," Cole said on Twitter.

"We have a great manager and team and I wish them only success. I will be supporting them like a true fan. Thanks to everyone for everything.

"#Baines and #shaw are great players, proved this season, and are the future of this country, it was a pleasure to get #107 caps. Like me or not, trust me it's hurt me to stop playing for my country #proud and #honoured."

Cole's tally of 107 caps puts him fifth on the all-time appearances list for England, one behind World Cup-winning captain Bobby Moore.
