Wayne Rooney: 'England are gutted'

Wayne Rooney reveals that the England team are feeling 'gutted' following their penalty shootout defeat to Italy at Euro 2012.

England striker Wayne Rooney has revealed that his teammates are feeling "gutted" following their penalty shootout to Italy in the quarter-finals of Euro 2012.

With neither side able to make the breakthrough after extra time in Kiev, misses from Ashley Young and Ashley Cole saw the Azzurri win 4-2 from the spot.

"It was a horrible way to go out," said Rooney. "We are all gutted.

"It was a tough game and we all worked hard, so to lose on penalties is a horrible feeling for everyone."

Italy will now meet Germany on Thursday for a place in the final.
