Calvert-Lewin not fazed by Euro 2019 pressure

The draw for Euro 2019 takes place in Italy on Friday.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin believes England Under-21s can handle the pressure at Euro 2019.

The Young Lions face Denmark in a friendly in Esbjerg on Tuesday ahead of Friday’s Euro 2019 draw in Bologna.

Aidy Boothroyd’s side beat Italy – next year’s hosts with San Marino – 2-1 on Thursday.

Calvert-Lewin scored the winner when England Under-20s beat Venezuela 1-0 to claim the World Cup last year and said the Young Lions are prepared for what 2019 can throw at them.

The Everton striker said: “I’ve had a lot of big experiences at a young age in terms of the World Cup and then playing in the Premier League – ups and downs – so I think that is a massive part.

“As a young player, when you are on the pitch and you are exposed to those kinds of things, it helps to build your character and build you as a person.

“It puts you in better stead for when you do face challenges in the future, you are more prepared to deal with it.”

England lost in the semi-finals to Germany on penalties at Euro 2017 and Calvert-Lewin feels the tournament is as big as the World Cup he won.

The 21-year-old said: “Yeah, of course. You have to look at the biggest trophy you can win through the age groups and this is the biggest one. This is what we are training for two years for, to try and compete and achieve the win, so it is the biggest one.

“If you look at the friendlies that we’re lining up, we’re looking to play against some top opposition to prepare us for next summer in the Euros.

“We’re confident in the ability that we’ve got in our squad and following finishing top of the group, so we’ll take confidence from that and look forward to the friendlies and preparing for the Euros in the summer.”
