Mark Chamberlain, father of England winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, admits that he missed his son's goal against Brazil after falling asleep during the 2-2 draw.

Mark Chamberlain has admitted that he slept through his son's fine strike for England in tonight's 2-2 draw with Brazil at the Maracana Stadium.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came off the bench to score a memorable equaliser for Roy Hodgson's side, smashing home from just outside the penalty area.

Despite settling down to watch the match, Mark admitted that tiredness set in and caused him to sleep through his son's second goal for the Three Lions.

He told BBC Sport immediately after the game: "I didn't see it, I was dropping his mother off at the airport at 6am this morning so I fell asleep [while watching]. It was on tape so I'll watch it in a minute. I realised when his agent rang me up.

"I was watching the game, it was a bit negative in the first half but England were more positive in the second half and Alex played well in the hole behind the strikers.

"He plays wide right, but that's his third best position, midfield or playing behind the striker is his best position."

Hodgson's side rallied late to earn a draw against next summer's World Cup hosts, with Oxlade-Chamberlain's goal followed by a strike from Wayne Rooney.
