Former Argentina international Diego Maradona has said that Wayne Rooney failed to produce his best form in England's defeat to Italy in the World Cup on Saturday.
The Manchester United striker has been criticised for his performance in the 2-1 defeat in Manaus, where he started on the left side of an attacking three behind Daniel Sturridge.
"It was an entertaining encounter where both teams tried to attack. Italy had more possession, but the young England side was remarkably speedy when they had the ball," Maradona told The Times of India.
"Rooney, who is yet to score a World Cup goal, failed to produce the magic that was expected of him."
England's second match in Group D is against Uruguay on Thursday.
