Everton's Roberto Martinez: 'Gareth Barry's absence due to loan rules is unfair'

Roberto Martinez hits out at loan rules by stating that Gareth Barry should be allowed to play against his parent club Manchester City on Saturday.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez believes that midfielder Gareth Barry should be allowed to play against his parent club Manchester City this weekend.

The 33-year-old will be absent from the Toffees' final match at Goodison Park this season due to rules preventing loaned-out players from competing against their clubs.

However, Martinez believes that the Premier League should take note of UEFA's rules, which allowed goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to feature in Atletico Madrid's 3-1 victory over parent club Chelsea in last night's Champions League semi-final.

"In my eyes, when you reach an agreement to allow a player to go, either on loan or permanently, he should be able to play," Martinez told reporters in Thursday's press conference. "The fairest way is what we saw last night with Courtois."

Everton head into Saturday's match four points behind Arsenal, who occupy the final Champions League spot in the table.
