Everton manager David Moyes has claimed that striker Nikica Jelavic had "something to prove" upon his move to Goodison Park.

The Croatian has scored three goals for the Toffees following his £5m January switch from Scottish champions Rangers.

Despite doubts over the 26-year-old's ability to adapt to English football, Moyes believes that it was money well spent.

"His all-round play has given us a lift," said the Scot. "We had badly needed a centre-forward for a couple of seasons and he felt as if he had something to prove.

"This has been a bit of a step up for Nicky but he is a bit of a silent assassin. Some of the players we have brought in over the years have needed time to settle but he has got on with it.

"We have needed him and are very happy with what he has done for us. He was well recommended by people like David Weir and Walter Smith. We had £5m to spend and we spent it wisely."

Jelavic is expected to feature for Everton when they travel to Norwich City later today (Saturday).
