Genoa edge past Virtus Lanciano in Coppa Italia third round

Mauricio Pinilla scores a penalty on his Genoa debut as the Serie A side avoid an upset in the Coppa Italia with victory over Virtus Lanciano.

Serie A side Genoa have avoided an upset in the Coppa Italia by ousting Virtus Lanciano this evening.

The decisive goal was scored by Chile international Mauricio Pinilla, who kept his cool from the penalty spot on the half-hour mark to net on his Genoa debut.

Lanciano, who last season finished 10th in Serie B, couldn't break the visitors down in the second half and exit at the third round.

They now begin their league campaign with a trip to Catania on Saturday, while Genoa open their Serie A season by hosting Napoli in a week's time.
