Late Chris Wood strike downs 10-man Leeds United

Millwall's Chris Wood heads in five minutes from time to hand his side the victory over Leeds United at The Den.

Chris Wood struck late to ensure that Millwall claimed maximum points from their home encounter with 10-man Leeds United at The Den this afternoon.

Hosting Millwall created the better of the goalscoring chances before the break, but they were unable to breach Paddy Kenny's net.

Centre-back Mark Beevers saw a header cleared off the line, while Kenny got down low at his near post to deny Andy Keogh from the edge of the area.

Keogh had another sight of goal in the 44th minute, but he curled his effort just beyond the upright with Kenny at full stretch.

Visiting Leeds were reduced to ten men just two minutes after the restart. Millwall's Adam Smith went down clutching his face following a clash with Luke Varney and the centre-forward was handed his marching orders by referee Mark Halsey for throwing out his elbow.

Despite dominating the encounter, it looked as though the home side were going to have settle for a point against their Yorkshire-based opposition.

However, with just five minutes remaining West Bromwich Albion loanee Wood stooped inside the area to guide Shane Lowry's cross past Kenny from six yards out.

Michael Tonge had Leeds's best chance to score an equaliser in stoppage time, but he fired his freekick from the edge of the box over David Forde's crossbar.

There was still time for Millwall to produce one more attack, which ended with substitute James Henry sending his rising effort against the bar.

Millwall have now gone 10 matches unbeaten in the Championship.
