Liverpool hopeful Dejan Lovren, Roberto Firmino will be fit for Villa match

Liverpool assistant boss Gary McAllister is hopeful that Dejan Lovren and Roberto Firmino will be fit to face Aston Villa after picking up injuries against Carlisle.

Liverpool assistant coach Gary McAllister has suggested that both Dejan Lovren and Roberto Firmino will be fit for Saturday's encounter against Aston Villa.

Both players picked up injuries during the Reds' victory over Carlisle United in the third round of the Capital One Cup at Anfield on Wednesday night.

"[Lovren's] landed awkwardly," McAllister told reporters. "It didn't look too good as he was stretchered off but fingers crossed I don't think it's as bad as it looked.

"[Firmino], like Dejan, landed badly. It was just a ball he went up for and he's landed on the base of his spine, just on his lower back. It's an awkward landing but he seems fine as well."

Liverpool were forced into penalties by their League Two opponents after they converted just one of their 47 shots at goal over 120 minutes.

With the game at 1-1 heading into penalties, Liverpool were able to win the shootout 3-2 and book themselves a place in the fourth round of the competition.
