Real Madrid duo David Alaba and Rodrygo are forced off with injuries during their team's 5-2 victory over Liverpool.

Real Madrid duo David Alaba and Rodrygo were both forced off with injuries during their team's 5-2 victory over Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Los Blancos fell two goals behind in the opening 14 minutes of their last-16 first leg with the Reds, as Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah registered for Jurgen Klopp's side.

However, Real Madrid went on to score five times without reply, with Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema scoring braces, while Eder Militao also registered, as the reigning champions secured a huge first-leg advantage.

The success came at a cost, though, with both Alaba and Rodrygo forced off during the contest at Anfield.

Alaba had to be replaced in the 27th minute of the match by Nacho, while Rodrygo was substituted for Dani Ceballos in the 81st minute of the European affair in England.

According to journalist Miguel Angel Diaz, Rodrygo suffered with 'overload in his gluteus', with the Brazil international now a major doubt for Saturday's Madrid derby with Atletico Madrid.

Meanwhile, Diaz claims that Alaba suffered a hamstring problem, with the Austria international set to undergo tests to determine the extent of the issue.

The defender has only recently returned from a calf problem which forced him to miss the Club World Cup and three La Liga matches against Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad and Valencia.

The 30-year-old is also a major doubt for this weekend's La Liga game with Atletico, in addition to the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final against Barcelona on March 2.

"Winning at Anfield isn't easy and doing so in a convincing manner is even more difficult. We're very pleased about that. The team showed that they're improving and that they've been at a good level in February after a tough January," Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti told reporters after the match.

"The season doesn't stop and we have to be at our best. We're pleased and we're confident we can do well.

"We struggled a lot at the start, but in the second half we made a difference. We didn't expect to get off to such a start, but as is often the case with this team, we stayed calm and gradually got into the game thanks to the quality we have.

"The forwards were highly effective and we created problems when we broke out of their pressure. We sorted out the defensive side of things and in the second half, we made a difference. We looked for our front players, who were outstanding today."

Ferland Mendy and Mariano Diaz both missed Real Madrid's clash with Liverpool through injury, while Aurelien Tchouameni did not make the trip to England due to illness.
