Emre Can: 'Steven Gerrard is still the same quality player'

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can is adamant that Steven Gerrard is still the same quality player that he has always been for the Reds amid criticism of his recent form.

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has admitted that he feels a lot more comfortable on the field when he plays alongside captain Steven Gerrard.

The 34-year-old has been criticised for the level of his performances this season, but Can is adamant that the former England skipper is still the same quality player he has always been for the Reds.

"Steven Gerrard doesn't play because his name is Steven Gerrard," Can told reporters.

"He plays because of what he brings in terms of performances. If that wasn't the case, he wouldn't play. He is as good as he was and I have learned a lot from him.

"Steven is the greatest captain Liverpool have ever had and I feel comfortable on the pitch because I always know he is behind me. If I make a mistake, he is always there helping me out. He is like a big brother."

Liverpool face struggling Crystal Palace at Selhusrt Park in their Premier League clash later today.
