Preview: Liverpool vs. Southampton

Sports Mole looks ahead to this weekend's Premier League encounter between leaders Liverpool and Southampton.

Liverpool can maintain their place at the top of the Premier League table if they are able to snatch all three points from Southampton at Anfield this weekend.

The Reds have had an unbeaten start to the season, but their 100% record came to an end courtesy of a 2-2 draw with Swansea City on Monday, with former player Jonjo Shelvey playing a part in all four of the goals during the match.

However, striker Daniel Sturridge managed to get on the scoresheet once again, bagging a goal in every single one of Liverpool's games so far this season.

Despite a strong start on the field, the Reds have been dealt an injury blow following the news that playmaker Philippe Coutinho will be sidelined until the end of October with a shoulder injury.

Iago Aspas is likely to come into the fold for manager Brendan Rodgers, while Kolo Toure could start in defence, replacing new signing Mamadou Sakho following his debut against the Swans on Monday.

Luis Suarez will be unavailable for the fixture against Southampton due to his 10-match ban for biting the arm of Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic last season, but he could be selected for Liverpool's League Cup clash against Manchester United in midweek.

For Southampton, Mauricio Pochettino's men have had a an inconsistent start to the season by recording one victory, two draws and a defeat, but goals have been hard to come by for the Saints.

The former Championship outfit struggled to break the deadlock in their goalless draw with West Ham United last Sunday, but Rickie Lambert and Pablo Osvaldo are likely to keep their places up front.

The Saints could move within the top 10 of the table if they manage to grab an away victory at Anfield.
