Glen Johnson refusing to beg for Liverpool contract extension

Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson says that he has no intentions of begging the club to extend his contract.

Glen Johnson has insisted that he will not "go crawling" to Liverpool for a contract extension amid speculation over his future.

The 30-year-old's existing deal at Anfield expires in the summer and the Reds could cash in on him this January, with Roma reportedly keen on the right-back.

Johnson confirmed that he held "minor talks" with the club over an extension during the summer, but added that the negotiations were not productive.

"I have enjoyed the majority of the six years; I've had some good times and some bad times, but if I haven't got a contract then I can't stay," he told Sky Sport News.

"Of course it plays on your mind but that is when you have to be professional and try to do a job for your team, and I respect my team-mates and I want to put in a performance for them.

"I want to play for a club that wants me - I am not going to go crawling to anybody. The club know where I am and they know the situation. There were minor talks at the end of last season but nothing I could accept or reject."

Johnson, who joined the Merseysiders for £18m from Portsmouth back in 2009, headed an 85th-minute winner in Saturday's 1-0 home win over Stoke City.
