Liverpool are reportedly set to pay Benfica £8.5m after Darwin Nunez makes his 60th appearance for the club in Saturday's draw with Manchester City.

Liverpool have reportedly triggered an £8.5m payment as part of Darwin Nunez's transfer from Benfica.

After spending two years with the Portuguese giants, Nunez joined Liverpool in a club-record deal in the summer of 2022.

Although the transfer was believed to be worth £85m, the Reds only paid £64m up front with the remaining £21m made up of add-ons.

Liverpool were forced to pay up £4.3m to Benfica once the Uruguayan had made 10 appearances for the Merseyside club.

According to The Mirror, they are now set to make another payment of £8.5m after Nunez made his 60th appearance for the club in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

Nunez was handed his seventh Premier League start of the season after a successful international period, where he scored three goals in two games for Uruguay.

The forward was unable to find the net in the crucial Premier League clash, with Trent Alexander-Arnold netting an 80th-minute equaliser to cancel out Erling Haaland's opener.

Nunez, who was replaced in the 85th minute, was involved in a fiery exchange with Man City boss Pep Guardiola following the full-time whistle at the Etihad Stadium.

The Uruguay international had to be dragged away by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who was asked whether the player's reaction was influenced by the rivalry between the two clubs.

"That is nothing to do with the fierce rivalry," Klopp told reporters: "You see that on the pitch. This situation on the pitch is nothing to do with the historic rivalry.

"I think Darwin Nunez knows nothing about that. It's just emotions. I am not sure I am the one to explain it. I am not involved - surprisingly.

"I love them both so I just tried to calm it down, without understanding a word. Pep wants to win, we want to win."

The 24-year-old has scored seven goals and provided six assists in 18 appearances across all competitions this season.
