Txiki Begiristain: 'Manchester City ready for Champions League success'

Txiki Begiristain believes that Manchester City should be considered genuine contenders to win the Champions League this season.

Manchester City's director of football Txiki Begiristain has claimed that the club are in the right position to be successful in the Champions League this season.

The Premier League champions have struggled in each of their three campaigns, reaching the knockout stages just once, but Begiristain believes that Manuel Pellegrini's side are genuine contenders in the competition.

"It's going to be tough but we are ready, ready," the Spaniard told reporters. "We have to aspire to win this title. Of course there are five, six, eight other clubs that can win it but we can as well, and why should we not set out to win the Champions League?

"We are good enough to fight for everything. I think we need a bit of luck with injuries, but if we get the performances we expect from the squad, we will be there.

"We have the squad to cope with a tough Champions League schedule and the Premier League. There is no reason why we can't compete to win both competitions."

It was revealed on Thursday that City will face Bayern Munich, Roma and CSKA Moscow in Group E.
