Roberto Mancini says his Manchester City side lack the experience to win the Champions League this season, even if they progress to the last 16.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has said that his side will not be able to win the Champions League this term, even if they qualify for the knockout stage.

The Citizens' progression to the last 16 is in doubt after a midweek defeat in Naples left them requiring victory over Group A leaders Bayern Munich on matchday six while Napoli must fail to win at pointless Villarreal.

The Italian believes that his squad lacks the experience required to win Europe's elite competition, despite recently claiming that his side were on a par with teams such as Barcelona.

"We should be realistic. I do not think we have a team to win the Champions League this season," said the 46-year-old.

"Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Inter Milan all have more experience than us.

"We hope we can stay in the Champions League. We hope we can beat Bayern Munich and Villarreal can get a draw with Napoli."

League leaders City travel to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
