Vincent Kompany insists that Manchester City's pre-season friendlies are all about improving fitness levels.

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has insisted that he is not worried by his side's 1-0 friendly loss to Al Hilal in Austria last night.

A single goal from Alabid Nawaf Shaker meant that the Premier League champions got their pre-season campaign off to a losing start.

However, Kompany is adamant that the City squad viewed the encounter as a way to boost their fitness levels ahead of the new season.

"For us it was a fitness hit," he told the club's official website. "We trained hard all week - especially yesterday as well. For us it was just good to get in another shift.

"For some of the young guys it was a good experience but other than that it was especially based on the fitness levels.

"As we progress into pre-season things will get more competitive."

City's next match is against Dynamo Dresden on Tuesday evening.
