Pep Guardiola talks up the 'controlled' display produced by Manchester City to overcome Everton 3-1 at Goodison Park.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said that he is delighted with the way his side "controlled the game" against Everton as they moved to within one win of the Premier League title.

The Citizens can now make certain of top spot with victory over rivals Manchester United next weekend after overcoming the Toffees 3-1 on Saturday evening.

Leroy Sane and Gabriel Jesus gave City a two-goal advantage with just 12 minutes on the clock, before a third was added by Raheem Sterling before the interval.

Everton managed to pull one back through Yannick Bolasie but it was plain sailing for the visitors, who are now potentially just a week away from securing a third Prem crown.

Speaking to BT Sport after the match, Guardiola said: "We knew we must win all games. We did our job in the first half - it was so, so good. We controlled the game and it was a huge victory. It was the first time as a manager I was able to beat Everton.

"It was a long time we weren't together so you always think 'what could happen' but it was good. We were clinical especially in the first half. Everybody committed to win the game. Now it is one more game and we will be champions. For the fans it is significant. It is special. It is important we win - no matter where."

Before taking on United at the Etihad Stadium next Saturday, City must first prepare for a Champions League quarter-final tie against Liverpool in midweek.
