The 21-year-old joined City in 2008, but since then he has made just one senior appearance for the club.
As a result, he has been granted permission to finish the season with Stoke in a bid to gain more starting action.
The Sweden international spent the previous term on loan at Dutch side Feyenoord, for whom he scored 20 goals.
